US Expels South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool Amid Diplomatic Tensions Over Criticism of Trump Administration

The United States has declared South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool persona non grata, effectively expelling him from the country. This action follows Rasool’s critical remarks about President Donald Trump during a recent webinar.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the decision, citing Rasool’s alleged “race-baiting” and opposition to the Trump administration as reasons for the expulsion.
In response, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation expressed regret over the U.S. decision but affirmed its commitment to maintaining a constructive relationship with the United States. The department is currently working to appoint a replacement for Ambassador Rasool.
This diplomatic incident occurs amid existing tensions between the two countries, particularly concerning South Africa’s land redistribution policies and differing stances on international issues.
The expulsion of Ambassador Rasool marks a significant escalation in these strained relations, with potential implications for future diplomatic engagements between South Africa and the United States.
