In a significant move, Cape Town City FC has officially announced the signing of veteran midfielder Thulani Serero, marking his return to South African football after an extensive career abroad. The club unveiled Serero on February 27, 2025, expressing enthusiasm for his homecoming:
“Cape Town made him. The world witnessed him. Welcome home, Thulani Serero.”
Born on April 11, 1990, in Soweto, Gauteng, Serero began his professional journey with Ajax Cape Town in 2008. His exceptional performances earned him multiple accolades in 2011, including PSL Footballer of the Year, PSL Player of the Season, PSL Players’ Player of the Season, and ABSA Premiership Red Hot Young Player.
In 2011, Serero transitioned to Ajax Amsterdam, where he contributed to the team’s success, securing three Eredivisie titles and a Dutch Super Cup. His European tenure also included appearances in the UEFA Champions League.
Following his time in the Netherlands, Serero ventured to the United Arab Emirates, playing for Al-Jazira and later Khor Fakkan. At Al-Jazira, he added the UAE Cup and the UAE Super Cup to his list of achievements.
After over a decade abroad, the 34-year-old midfielder’s return is poised to bolster Cape Town City’s midfield. Head coach Muhsin Ertugral expressed optimism about Serero’s impact on the team, highlighting his experience and skill set as valuable assets.
Serero is expected to be available for selection in the upcoming Betway Premiership match against AmaZulu FC. His presence is anticipated to enhance the team’s performance and provide mentorship to younger players within the squad.
