Veteran goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse is set to depart Mamelodi Sundowns at the conclusion of the current season, upon the expiration of his contract. This decision marks the end of a notable tenure with the club, during which Pieterse contributed to multiple title victories.
Born on February 17, 1992, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Pieterse’s football career commenced at Bidvest Wits. His potential was soon recognized, leading him to the Nike Football Academy and subsequently to Irish club Shamrock Rovers in 2012. During his stint in Ireland, he made his senior debut in a League of Ireland Cup match against SD Galway on April 9, 2012. Later that year, he secured the Leinster Senior Cup with the team.
In January 2013, Pieterse returned to South Africa, signing with Kaizer Chiefs. Over three seasons, he amassed 24 league appearances and was part of squads that clinched the Premier Soccer League titles in the 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons, as well as the Nedbank Cup in 2013.
Seeking more playing opportunities, Pieterse joined SuperSport United in 2016. Here, he added the 2016-17 Nedbank Cup and the 2017 MTN 8 titles to his accolades. His performances caught the attention of Mamelodi Sundowns, leading to his transfer in August 2018.
At Mamelodi Sundowns, Pieterse faced stiff competition for the starting goalkeeper position, primarily serving as a backup. Despite limited on-field action, his presence in the squad contributed to the club’s dominance in domestic competitions. During his tenure, Sundowns secured multiple Premier Soccer League titles, with Pieterse being part of the squad that achieved these successes.
As the current season concludes, reports indicate that Pieterse’s contract with Mamelodi Sundowns will not be renewed, making him a free agent. This development opens the door for potential moves, either within the Premier Soccer League or to international clubs seeking an experienced goalkeeper.
At 33, Pieterse brings a wealth of experience and a decorated resume. His impending departure from Mamelodi Sundowns signals a new chapter in his career, with anticipation building around his next professional endeavor. Clubs in need of a seasoned and reliable goalkeeper will undoubtedly monitor his situation closely as the transfer window approaches.
