In a recent address, former South African Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Rob Davies, criticized AfriForum and Solidarity for their international campaign, which he claims disseminates misleading information about South Africa’s internal policies. This campaign has reportedly influenced foreign perceptions and policies, notably in the United States.
AfriForum is a South African civil rights organization established in 2006, primarily advocating for the rights of Afrikaners and other minority communities. Solidarity, a trade union, is associated with AfriForum and focuses on labor rights within the same demographic. Both organizations have been active in voicing concerns over issues such as land expropriation and affirmative action policies, often engaging with international entities to garner support for their positions.
In early 2025, AfriForum and Solidarity launched a campaign in the United States opposing South Africa’s Expropriation Act, which aims to address historical land disparities by allowing for the expropriation of land without compensation in certain circumstances. The organizations argue that this policy unfairly targets white landowners and could lead to economic instability. Their efforts included meetings with U.S. government officials and lobbying for political intervention.
This campaign coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order in February 2025, which misrepresented South Africa’s Expropriation Act as discriminatory against white farmers. The order resulted in the suspension of financial aid to South Africa and offered political asylum to white South African farmers, actions that have been widely criticized both domestically and internationally.
Dr. Rob Davies, who served as Minister of Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2019, expressed strong disapproval of AfriForum and Solidarity’s actions. He accused the groups of spreading disinformation and undermining South Africa’s sovereignty by soliciting foreign intervention in domestic affairs. Davies emphasized that such actions not only misrepresent the realities of South African policies but also sow division within the nation.
In a statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa echoed these sentiments, asserting that South Africa’s challenges should be addressed internally and cautioning against involving external parties in domestic issues. He stressed the importance of national unity and dialogue in resolving the country’s problems.
The campaign by AfriForum and Solidarity has sparked significant debate within South Africa. Critics argue that by appealing to foreign governments, these organizations are bypassing democratic processes and potentially jeopardizing the country’s international relations. Supporters, however, contend that they are exercising their rights to seek international support against policies they deem unjust.
Legal experts have noted that while lobbying foreign entities is not illegal, it raises ethical questions about national loyalty and the potential consequences of foreign interference.
