South African singer and songwriter Tyla Laura Seethal, known professionally as Tyla, has made history by becoming the first African solo artist to surpass one billion streams on Spotify with her hit single “Water.” This remarkable achievement underscores her rapid ascent in the global music scene and highlights the growing international appreciation for African music.
Born on January 30, 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Tyla hails from a diverse background with Zulu, Irish, Indian, and Mauritian ancestry. Her parents, Sharleen and Sherwin Seethal, recognized her passion for music early on and nurtured her talents. During her time at Edenglen High School, Tyla’s dedication to the arts was evident as she served as the head of culture in her final year, showcasing her leadership skills and commitment to her craft.
Tyla’s musical journey began in earnest with the release of her debut single, “Getting Late,” in 2019. The song garnered significant attention within South Africa, leading to her signing with Epic Records in 2021. Her unique fusion of pop and amapiano-a genre characterized by deep house, jazz, and lounge music elements-has earned her the title “Queen of Popiano.”
