The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has appointed Wassem Carrim as its new acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. This appointment follows the end of Freeman Nomvalo’s term as the administrator of NSFAS.
Dr. Karen Stander, the Chairperson of the NSFAS Board, expressed confidence in Carrim’s leadership, highlighting his experience as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and former CEO of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA).
Carrim’s appointment comes at a time when NSFAS has faced significant challenges, particularly regarding the timely disbursement of student funds. The organization has been under scrutiny due to delays in funding for students’ tuition fees and living expenses.
Educational experts and student organizations have raised concerns, urging that a permanent CEO be appointed as soon as possible to address these issues effectively.
