KwaNongoma, South Africa – In a significant development concerning the governance of the Ingonyama Trust, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Mzwanele Nyhontso met with King Misuzulu kaZwelithini at the KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in KwaNongoma.
The meeting aimed to address ongoing concerns regarding the Trust’s administration and to seek collaborative solutions to its challenges.
Following the discussions, Minister Nyhontso announced the formation of a 12-member team tasked with reviewing the Ingonyama Trust Board’s performance. This initiative aligns with King Misuzulu’s recent decision to dissolve the board amid governance disputes. The team’s mandate includes assessing the board’s operations and providing recommendations on its future structure and management.
The Ingonyama Trust, established in 1994, oversees approximately 2.8 million hectares of land in KwaZulu-Natal, benefiting traditional communities. King Misuzulu serves as the sole trustee, responsible for the Trust’s administration. Recent tensions have arisen concerning the board’s governance, leading to interventions from both the provincial and national governments.
The African National Congress (ANC) leadership in KwaZulu-Natal has stated that it will not interfere in the Ingonyama Trust’s management. Provincial coordinator Mike Mabuyakhulu emphasized that matters concerning the Trust are governed by existing legislation, acknowledging King Misuzulu’s role as the sole trustee and the presence of traditional leaders on the land.
In response to the unfolding situation, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Land Reform has expressed a desire to meet with King Misuzulu to discuss the governance issues plaguing the Ingonyama Trust. The committee underscores the importance of stability and effective land management in the region.
The meeting between Minister Nyhontso and King Misuzulu marks a pivotal step toward resolving the governance challenges facing the Ingonyama Trust.
