Durban, South Africa – Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police, has firmly rejected allegations of corruption and abuse of power, claiming they are part of a calculated smear campaign aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
The controversy arose following accusations that Mkhwanazi interfered with the arrest of a senior prison official linked to a drug cartel, suggesting possible obstruction of justice within the province.
These accusations have sparked a wave of concern both within the police force and the public, raising questions about possible corruption in the upper echelons of law enforcement.
Mkhwanazi, however, insists that the claims are baseless and unfounded, attributing them to efforts aimed at undermining his leadership and the effectiveness of the KZN police.
In response, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the KZN police spokesperson, labeled the allegations as “malicious” and “unfounded,” stating that they were part of a deliberate campaign to distract from the police’s crucial crime-fighting efforts. Meanwhile, National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola expressed his understanding of the situation, suggesting that the smear campaign was designed to destabilize the department and hinder its operations.
Public support for Mkhwanazi remains strong, particularly given his proactive approach to combatting crime in KZN, which has witnessed a decrease in violent crime under his leadership. His tenure has seen significant efforts to crack down on drug-related crimes, gang violence, and organized criminal activity in the province.
KZN Premier Thami Ntuli also voiced his confidence in Mkhwanazi’s leadership, assuring that the province’s police force would continue to work toward public safety despite the ongoing controversy.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), however, has called for a full parliamentary inquiry into the matter. The party seeks clarity on the allegations of interference and potential sabotage within the police ranks, demanding transparency and accountability.
As the investigations continue, it remains to be seen whether these claims will impact Mkhwanazi’s position as one of the country’s most respected police officials.
