IPID Investigates KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for Alleged Interference in High-Profile Arrest

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has initiated an investigation into KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The probe centers on allegations that he interfered with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official accused of operating a drug cartel at Westville Prison. The incident in question reportedly occurred in Richards Bay in 2023.
IPID has requested that Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi submit a sworn statement detailing his involvement by March 19, 2025. The investigation stems from a complaint lodged by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, alleging abuse of power and interference in the arrest process.
In response, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal has defended Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi, dismissing the allegations as baseless.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda suggested that these claims are attempts to tarnish Mkhwanazi’s reputation due to his stringent anti-crime initiatives in the province.
As the investigation is ongoing, IPID has refrained from making further comments until its conclusion.
