Banyana Banyana will be forced to soldier on without a number of key players after positive Covid-19 cases emerged in Morocco.
South Africa’s team physician, Dr Rodney Mokoka confirmed that a number of players in the Banyana squad have tested positive for Covid-19.
The news comes a day after it was confirmed Thembi Kgatlana will miss the rest of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign due to injury.
Though cognisant of the potential effects of the recent blows on the team, Ellis said her side is more focused.
The 59-year-old former Banyana Banyana captain said; “We selected the squad for every eventuality. Though we didn’t expect this, the versatility has to come through now. And what I saw at training today was really encouraging.”
“It is really important to continue with that momentum going into the next game, which is the big one, the quarterfinal. There is no second chance, no three points. This is a game where we have to give our all to make sure we reach our objectives, which is to qualify for the World Cup,” said Ellis.
The names of the players who tested positive were not disclosed while a team official had also tested positive.
The 2022 WAFCON took place for the first time in four years after the previous edition was canned because of Corona Virus outbreak.
Banyana will lock horns with Tunisia on Thursday in a quarter final clash.
