Atleast one student shot and killed at Durban University of Technology.

A 20 years-old student was shot dead during a student protest at Durban University of Technology, in Steve Biko campus on Tuesday afternoon.

South African Police Service Spokes Person for KwaZulu-Natal, Colonel Thembeka Mbele confirmed the incident.

“A group of students tried to storm the administrative building with stones which reasulted to one administration staff member and a security guard injured. Due to uncontrolled conditions, the securities were forced to call for a backup which led to one student being shot in the abdomen by the private security,” She said.

“Student died while receiving medical attention at City Hospital,” she added

The cause of death and detailsof the incident are still subject to police investigation, and the identity of the student cannot be divulged at this stage.

As a reasult of this shocking incident, the University management has decided to shut down the University until futher notice.
