In a decisive move to rejuvenate its presence in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), the African National Congress (ANC) has unveiled a 67-member Provincial Task Team (PTT). This initiative follows the disbandment of the previous Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) due to the party’s underwhelming performance in the 2024 general elections, where it secured only 17.2% of the vote, placing third in the province.
The PTT is spearheaded by seasoned ANC stalwarts, Jeff Radebe(Convenor), a veteran with extensive experience in both governmental and party structures, and Mike Mabuyakhulu (Coordinator) known for his prior leadership roles within the province.
Supporting them are Weziwe Thusi (1st Deputy Provincial Convenor), the former provincial chairperson Sboniso Duma (2nd Deputy Provincial Convenor), and the former premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube (Deputy Coordinator).
Notably, former provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo has been reassigned to oversee the policy, monitoring, and evaluation subcommittee, ensuring his continued contribution to the party’s strategic initiatives.
The establishment of the PTT serves as an interim mechanism with a clear mandate to address internal challenges and foster unity within the party’s provincial structures, Enhance the political acumen of members to align with the ANC’s core values and objectives and rebuild and strengthen the party’s presence and functionality across KZN.
This strategic reconfiguration aims to restore the ANC’s prominence in the province, especially in light of its recent electoral setbacks.
The ANC’s decision to overhaul its KZN leadership was precipitated by a significant decline in electoral support during the 2024 general elections. The party’s third-place finish necessitated introspection and a proactive approach to regain the trust of the electorate. The formation of the PTT is a testament to the ANC’s commitment to organizational renewal and adaptability in response to evolving political dynamics.
By entrusting experienced leaders with the task of steering the province towards recovery, the ANC aims to rejuvenate its base, address internal discord, and reestablish its influence in KZN’s political landscape.
The coming months will be pivotal as the PTT embarks on its mission to implement reforms, engage with communities, and lay the groundwork for future electoral successes. The effectiveness of this task team will not only impact the ANC’s fortunes in KZN but could also serve as a blueprint for similar interventions in other regions facing analogous challenges.
