Pretoria, March 10, 2025 – The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s Gauteng branch organized a demonstration at Pretoria’s Church Square this morning to oppose the government’s proposed 2% increase in Value-Added Tax (VAT). Party Secretary General Floyd Shivambu criticized the hike, emphasizing that many South Africans are already struggling to afford basic necessities, and the additional tax burden would exacerbate their hardships.
The MK Women’s League also voiced strong opposition to the VAT increase, labeling it a direct attack on black women. National coordinator Lindiwe Mtshali argued that the hike would disproportionately affect vulnerable groups, particularly women who head households. She highlighted that 42.3% of South African households are led by single mothers, pensioners, or unemployed women already facing economic challenges.
The proposed VAT increase has sparked widespread debate. While Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana suggests the adjustment is necessary to align with global standards and support public services, opposition leaders and civil society groups warn that it would lead to higher living costs, adversely impacting the most vulnerable populations.
The MK Party’s demonstration underscores the growing public dissent against the proposed tax hike, reflecting broader concerns about its potential socioeconomic impact.
