An oversight visit by the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services to correctional facilities in KwaZulu-Natal has revealed alarming claims that some wardens are bowing to pressure from inmates.
The committee’s investigation found that certain wardens may have been coerced or manipulated into complying with inmate demands, undermining the authority and security of the facilities.
The allegations suggest that inmates are using bribes or psychological tactics to influence prison staff, which could compromise safety and order within the institutions.
In response, the Department of Correctional Services has pledged to investigate the claims and implement stronger oversight and training protocols to ensure wardens are not vulnerable to manipulation.
The Portfolio Committee is pushing for immediate reforms, including enhanced monitoring, stricter vetting of staff, and additional training in ethics and conflict management.
The revelation has sparked concerns about the integrity of the prison system and highlights the urgent need for reform to maintain control and discipline in South Africa’s correctional facilities.
