President Cyril Ramaphosa has wished Team South Africa success ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying the country stands behind its athletes as they prepare to compete in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Commonwealth Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August. Team South Africa will be represented by 112 athletes competing against participants from 56 Commonwealth nations. Ramaphosa’s message was shared as South Africa joined other member nations in marking the start of the multi-sport event.
“I look forward to our flag being flown at venues across Glasgow, Scotland, during the Commonwealth Games from 23 July to 2 August,” Ramaphosa said.
The President said South Africans are proud of the athletes selected to represent the country on the international stage. He also expressed hope that Team South Africa would achieve success both in competition and on the medal podium.
“On behalf of all South Africans, I wish Team South Africa well in the competition arenas and on the medal podiums,” he said.
Ramaphosa also echoed comments made by Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey on the role of sport within the Commonwealth. He agreed that sport promotes excellence, discipline and values that help strengthen societies.
“I agree with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey that sport is one of the Commonwealth’s greatest shared assets and that it inspires excellence, discipline and values that strengthen our societies,” Ramaphosa said.
The Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth in one of the world’s largest multi-sport events. South Africa will be aiming to add to its medal tally as its athletes compete across several sporting codes during the competition.
