Mbekezeli Mbokazi has turned his famous “TLB” nickname into a commercial success after securing a brand partnership with construction and mining equipment giant Barloworld Equipment. The deal celebrates the Bafana Bafana defender’s nickname, which stands for Tractor-Loader-Backhoe and reflects his powerful, uncompromising style of defending.

The 20-year-old Chicago Fire and Bafana Bafana centre-back has become one of South Africa’s fastest-rising football stars following his impressive performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Fans first coined the “TLB” nickname during his Orlando Pirates days, comparing his physical strength and ability to win tackles to the heavy-duty construction machine.

Barloworld Equipment has now embraced that connection by announcing a collaboration with Mbokazi, making him the face of a campaign built around the popular nickname. The partnership highlights how a football chant from supporters has evolved into a commercial brand, with “TLB” becoming one of the most recognisable nicknames in South African football.

Mbokazi’s rise has been remarkable. After breaking through at Orlando Pirates, he earned a move to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire before starring for Bafana Bafana at the World Cup, where his commanding displays attracted international attention. His performances have also sparked interest from clubs in Europe, although his representatives have said no formal offers have yet been received.

The Barloworld partnership marks another milestone in Mbokazi’s growing profile both on and off the pitch. It also demonstrates how his distinctive “TLB” identity has become a marketable brand beyond football, turning a fan created nickname into a major commercial opportunity.
