South African football super fan Mama Joy Chauke has publicly backed incumbent SAFA president Danny Jordaan, delivering a blunt assessment of challenger Sandile Zungu’s presidential ambitions.
The vocal supporter made waves ahead of the SAFA elective congress by breaking her organization’s neutral stance. Despite holding the role of secretary-general for the South African National Supporters Union (SANASU), which refuses to officially endorse either candidate, Chauke did not hold back her personal convictions. Speaking openly about the leadership battle, she questioned why delegates would seek a replacement for Jordaan when national teams are performing.
“I will be going to the conference as a guest of the President of SAFA, Dr Danny Jordaan, to support him and wish him good luck,” Chauke told one of the South African soccer magazines. “I’m a happy supporter. Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana are doing well, what else do I need as a supporter? The president still needs to lead us to AFCON and WAFCON, the FIFA Women’s World Cup and men’s World Cup. Why fix if not broken?”
Her endorsement serves as a direct roadblock to Zungu, the AmaZulu FC owner who is actively lobbying for change and reform within the country’s football structures. Rather than viewing Zungu as an immediate threat to the leadership, Chauke relegated his campaign to a future prospect.
“Bab’ Zungu will win the next election in 2030, not this one. This one, Dr Jordaan will win it,” Chauke added, dismissing the challenger’s current campaign momentum.
The open alignment of such a prominent public figure adds a controversial layer of politicking to the looming elections. While Zungu campaigns heavily on revitalizing grassroots systems and financial transparency, the active pushback from influential figures within the fanbases demonstrates the deep-rooted support that Jordaan continues to command within the local football framework.
