Disbarred advocate Malesela Teffo has been arrested by the South African Police Service in Pretoria after a dramatic walk-in at the regulatory body that stripped him of his credentials.
The controversial legal figure was taken into police custody on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, directly from the premises of the Legal Practice Council (LPC). Law enforcement officials confirmed that Teffo had entered the LPC offices in a bold bid to obtain a certificate of good standing.
Recognizing the former advocate, sharp-eyed regulatory officials immediately alerted the police to execute an active warrant. The apprehension marks a swift conclusion to a weeks-long police search that intensified after his highly disruptive and uninvited behavior in the High Court.
The legal trouble stems directly from a contempt of court order issued earlier in the month. The LPC had formally pursued a warrant following an incident on 31 August 2026, where Teffo unexpectedly arrived at the Johannesburg High Court during the attempted-murder trial of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Dressed in full legal robes, Teffo claimed to represent a foundation and attempted to address the presiding judge, arguing that the constitutional rights of the accused were being severely violated.
His unexpected interference drew sharp resistance from the actual legal defense teams and the accused individuals themselves, who complained that he was wasting valuable court time. When challenged by Judge Cassim Moosa to produce documentation proving his reinstatement to the bar, Teffo failed to do so and was promptly ordered out of the courtroom.
This latest courtroom stunt directly breached the 2022 judicial order that permanently struck Teffo from the roll of practitioners following twenty-two severe counts of professional misconduct, including dishonest behavior, taking briefs directly from clients without a fidelity fund, and misappropriation of funds. Following his disbarment, Teffo gained widespread notoriety during his short, chaotic stint representing the accused in the high-profile Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, which he abruptly exited while leveling wild accusations of witchcraft and presidential interference.
Despite his claims that the restriction order against him was fraudulent, the LPC has repeatedly affirmed that he has no legal authority to practice or represent anyone in a South African court.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that Teffo is currently being detained at the Pretoria Central police station and is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday
