Imprisoned self-proclaimed political fixer and businessman Brown Mogotsi allegedly hatched a bold plot to sneak out of the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court cells by dressing up as a prison guard.
The startling details emerged in court on Tuesday during the North West businessman fourth attempt to secure bail. State prosecutors revealed that the foiled escape was scheduled to take place on 20 August 2026.
According to the prosecution, Mogotsi planned to acquire an official Correctional Services uniform. He intended to slip into the guard clothing inside the court holding cells and simply walk out of the building unnoticed.
However, intelligence officials at the Johannesburg Correctional Services Centre uncovered the plot early that morning. Prison officials immediately ordered transport guards to place Mogotsi in heavy leg irons before he left the prison, successfully neutralizing the escape threat before he reached the courtroom.
Mogotsi has been behind bars since May 2026 following a bizarre shooting incident in Vosloorus in November 2025. At the time, Mogotsi claimed he survived an ambush by unknown gunmen who riddled his car with bullets. A subsequent police investigation exposed the hit as a hoax.
Security footage and ballistic tests revealed that the vehicle was parked and completely empty during the shooting. Mogotsi allegedly fired 11 rounds into his own car to stage the attack and later lied under oath to investigators to frame the incident as an assassination attempt. He currently faces charges of perjury, defeating the ends of justice, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Investigators also claim Mogotsi attempted to bribe the lead detective on his case.
The state is leveraging the newly uncovered escape plot to argue that Mogotsi is an extreme flight risk who must remain behind bars until his trial.
Defense lawyers requested time to review the state’s new evidence regarding the prison break plot. The magistrate has postponed the bail hearing until 1 September 2026 to allow the defense to prepare their response.
