Several production houses have voiced frustration over the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) ongoing failure to pay for services rendered.
These production companies, which have been contracted by the national broadcaster to produce content, claim that outstanding payments are causing significant financial strain and impacting their operations.
The issue has been escalating in recent months, with production houses highlighting that SABC owes them for work completed in the past year.
Some producers have stated that the delays in payment are not only damaging their cash flow but are also affecting their ability to meet obligations to staff and suppliers.
In response, SABC has acknowledged the payment delays but cited financial constraints and budgetary challenges as the main reasons for the backlog. However, critics argue that the broadcaster’s financial mismanagement and lack of timely payments are exacerbating the already difficult situation for production companies, which rely on timely compensation to sustain their operations.
As the situation worsens, industry leaders are calling for urgent reform in how the SABC manages contracts and payments.
Many are urging the government to step in to resolve the issue and ensure that production houses receive the funds owed to them, warning that the broadcaster’s reputation and the future of local content production could be at risk if the problem is not addressed.
