The Border Management Authority (BMA) has confirmed that operations at several border posts in Limpopo remain suspended due to severe flooding in the region.
The flooding, which has significantly affected key border posts, particularly those along the Beitbridge, Groblersbrug, and Punda Maria routes, has caused considerable damage to infrastructure, including roads, fences, and access points.
The affected areas have become difficult to navigate, making it challenging for both vehicles and pedestrians to cross into neighboring countries. This disruption has impacted the movement of goods and people, causing delays in cross-border trade and travel, which are crucial to the region’s economy.
The BMA is working closely with local authorities to assess the full extent of the damage and to restore operations at the affected border posts as quickly as possible. However, the suspension continues as the region deals with the aftermath of heavy rains and the associated flooding. Local authorities are also focusing on clearing roads and conducting repairs to allow for the safe reopening of these critical border points.
The situation has underscored the need for improved disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience to handle extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change.
Efforts are underway to ensure that the region’s border operations can resume as soon as conditions improve.
