Lotto Heist: SIU Obtains Interdict to Block Payment to Former NLC Board Member
The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has secured an interdict to prevent funds from being paid to a former board member of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), as part of its ongoing investigation into allegations of large-scale fraud and corruption involving lottery funds.
The NLC has been at the center of a corruption scandal, with millions of rands allegedly misappropriated through fraudulent grant allocations meant for charitable projects. The SIU’s probe has uncovered how lottery funds were funneled into luxury properties, personal businesses, and other unauthorized expenses.
The SIU, empowered by a presidential proclamation, has been actively pursuing legal action against individuals implicated in the scheme. The latest court interdict prevents payments from being made to a former NLC board member believed to have played a role in the fraudulent transactions.
According to SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago, this move is part of a broader effort to recover misused public funds. “We are determined to ensure that those who have unlawfully benefited from lottery funds are held accountable,” he stated.
The High Court’s decision to grant the interdict means that the former board member cannot receive funds pending the outcome of further investigations and potential legal proceedings.
With this legal victory, the SIU is now intensifying efforts to track and recover millions of rands linked to the Lotto scandal. More individuals are expected to face legal scrutiny, with potential asset seizures and criminal charges looming.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations and anti-corruption groups have welcomed the interdict, urging authorities to expedite the prosecution of those involved. The NLC, under new leadership, has pledged to implement stronger governance measures to prevent future financial misconduct.
