Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity utility, has announced a reduction in load shedding to Stage 2, effective from 16:00 today until midnight. This decision comes in response to lower electricity demand and an improvement in generation capacity. Earlier in the day, load shedding was suspended from 12:00 to 16:00 to provide relief to consumers.
The recent return to service of multiple generating units has bolstered Eskom’s capacity. Notably, all five units at the Majuba power station and two units at Camden were restored after experiencing control system issues. These recoveries have been instrumental in stabilizing the power grid and reducing the severity of load shedding stages.
Eskom’s CEO, Dan Marokane, highlighted the significance of these developments, stating, “The successful return of these units is a testament to our commitment to improving the reliability of our power supply. We will continue to work diligently to ensure that our infrastructure meets the country’s energy demands.”
In addition to the restored units, the recent refurbishment and reconnection of the second unit at the Koeberg nuclear power plant have added approximately 930 megawatts to the national grid. This enhancement has further strengthened South Africa’s electricity supply, contributing to a more stable energy environment.
While these improvements are promising, Eskom continues to monitor the power system closely. The utility urges consumers to use electricity sparingly, especially during peak hours, to maintain the stability of the grid and minimize the need for further load shedding.
As Eskom progresses with its maintenance and recovery plans, the nation remains cautiously optimistic about a sustained reduction in load shedding incidents, aiming for a more reliable and efficient power supply in the near future.
