As of February 13, 2025, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has announced that motor licensing and registration authorities across the province will no longer accept cash payments. This policy shift is part of a broader initiative to enhance security, streamline operations, and promote the use of electronic payment methods.
Traditionally, cash transactions have been the norm at motor licensing and registration offices in KwaZulu-Natal. However, concerns over security risks associated with handling large sums of cash, administrative inefficiencies, and the global trend towards digitalization have prompted the department to reconsider this approach.
To adapt to this change, the department has introduced several alternative payment options which includes electronic funds transfer(EFT), credit and debit cards, and online payments.
The department has provided a grace period until March 31, 2025, for the public to transition to these new payment methods. After this date, cash payments will no longer be accepted at any motor licensing and registration offices in KwaZulu-Natal.
To assist with this transition, the department has set up helpdesks at all licensing offices. Staff are available to guide the public through the new payment processes and address any concerns. Additionally, detailed information and FAQs are available on the department’s official website.
The discontinuation of cash payments is a significant move towards modernizing the province’s motor licensing and registration system.
