The South African entertainment world is in absolute pieces today following the devastating news that township soul pioneer and beloved music icon Babsy Mlangeni has passed away.

The legendary multi-instrumentalist and vocalist has closed his final chapter at the age of 83 after a brief battle with a short illness. Heartbroken tributes are already flooding social media as fans, celebs, and industry insiders process the end of an extraordinary era for Mzansi music.

Born in Orlando East, Soweto, back in 1943, Mlangeni defied every single obstacle after losing his sight at just three years old. Instead of letting life hold him back, he transformed into South Africa’s very first black blind superstar, teaching himself to master the guitar, piano, and saxophone. In 1962, he shook up the scene by co-founding The All-Rounders, a brilliant group consisting mostly of visually impaired musicians who proved that raw talent always outshines physical limitations.

The music maestro truly catapulted into the stratosphere of superstardom in the late 1960s with the massive release of “Sala Emma,” a beautiful breakout track dedicated to the absolute love of his life, his wife Emma. Over a dazzling career that spanned nearly six decades, Mlangeni blessed the world with more than 25 gold discs and numerous chart-topping albums like Soul of Babsy.

His incredible impact did not go unnoticed, earning him consecutive Best Male Vocalist titles in the mid 1970s and multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards, including a prestigious nod at the South African Music Awards.

Beyond the glamorous stage lights and hit records, Mlangeni was a fierce, outspoken advocate for artists with disabilities. He consistently called out festivals and media lineups for failing to give disabled musicians the spotlight they rightfully earned. He was also known for doling out some serious tough-love financial wisdom to the younger generation, famously urging rising stars to ditch the flashy lifestyle and invest in property to avoid the common industry pitfalls.

Mlangeni leaves behind an incomparable legacy of resilience, soulful melodies, and pure, unfiltered artistry that will echo through the streets of Soweto and beyond for generations to come.
