The University of the Witwatersrand has issued a strong public rebuttal following a wave of viral social media posts alleging that the vast majority of its workforce consists of foreign nationals.
The institution dismissed the online claims as “fake news,” clarifying that its actual international staff complement sits at 9%.
The administrative pushback followed highly publicized online commentary questioning the employment of international academics in local lecturing positions. This quickly spiraled into unverified claims across digital channels suggesting that between 80% and 98% of the institution’s personnel were from outside South Africa.
University officials released a formal advisory warning that such inflated figures serve a malicious agenda.
“Wits is aware of fake news being shared regarding the number of international staff employed at the University,” the statement read. The administration requested that the public “refrain from sharing misinformation which seeks to sow division in our community and our country.”
The dispute emerges at a time of broader national scrutiny. Earlier this year, Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Higher Education pressured local institutions to provide audited demographic data to ensure recruitment complies with local employment statutes and prioritizes domestic talent where skills are available.
Addressing these underlying structural anxieties, the institution outlined its recruitment strategy. The leadership stated that its approach to global recruitment “does not occur at the expense of transformation or the development and employment of South African talent.”
Rather than prioritizing one demographic exclusively, the administration noted its focus is on maintaining a balanced institution that simultaneously cultivates local leadership and incorporates elite global expertise.
