Suspended EMPD deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi returns to court over Emmanuel Mbense’s murder. Mkhwanazi and four co-accused appear at Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
They face charges including murder and defeating the ends of justice. The charges relate to Mbense’s killing and the events surrounding his death.
Mkhwanazi’s latest court appearance is not his only criminal case. He previously appeared in court and was granted bail in separate matters.
Those previous bail proceedings remain part of Mkhwanazi’s wider legal history. However, Thursday’s proceedings focus specifically on the Mbense murder case.
The allegations have placed renewed attention on Mkhwanazi’s role within EMPD. He remains suspended from his position while the criminal proceedings continue.
The Brakpan court will determine the next steps in the ongoing matter. Further proceedings are expected as prosecutors and defence lawyers address the charges.
