Mzikayifani Elias “Mzi” Khumalo has died in Gauteng after a short illness, authorities confirmed Monday.

Khumalo, a former Gauteng MEC and ANC provincial spokesperson, died on August 10, 2026. His specific illness and exact place of death have not been disclosed.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi confirmed Khumalo’s death and paid tribute to the former provincial executive member. Lesufi described him as a dedicated public servant whose contribution would be remembered.

Khumalo served in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature and previously held senior municipal positions. At the time of his death, he chaired the legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

The ANC has also mourned Khumalo’s passing. The party extended condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and political comrades.
