Jacob Zuma has overseen a leadership reshuffle in the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, appointing his son, Duduzane Zuma, as First Deputy President. The appointment was confirmed by party spokesperson Sifiso Mahlangu and forms part of ongoing adjustments to the party’s senior leadership structure.
The change follows the removal of Dr John Hlophe from the position of First Deputy President. The party has stated that Hlophe will remain its parliamentary leader, although it has not publicly provided detailed reasons for the restructuring.
As a relatively new political formation, the MK Party is still in the process of formalising its internal governance structures, including how authority is distributed between its national leadership and parliamentary caucus. The latest reshuffle is being viewed by some observers as part of that broader organisational development.
Duduzane Zuma’s elevation places him in one of the party’s top leadership roles. While the MK Party has not published a formal job description for the position, it is generally understood within political reporting to involve strategic input and public-facing responsibilities.
Duduzane Zuma, the son of former president Jacob Zuma and the late Kate Mantsho, was born in Maputo, Mozambique, during his parents’ exile. He later lost his mother in 2000 and grew up alongside his twin sister, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, during his father’s rise in national politics.
He was educated at Empangeni High School and later studied Information Technology at Nelson Mandela University’s School of ICT. His early career included an internship at Sahara Computers, a company associated with the Gupta family, which later became central to testimony presented at the State Capture Commission of Inquiry.
During Jacob Zuma’s presidency, he was linked to business ventures including Mabengela Investments and Tegeta Exploration. These companies were referenced in evidence and testimony presented before the Zondo Commission on State Capture, although findings and interpretations varied across different aspects of the inquiry.
Duduzane Zuma has faced several legal matters over the years. In 2014, he was involved in a fatal car accident in Johannesburg in which two people died. An inquest initially found him negligent, but he was later acquitted of culpable homicide in subsequent court proceedings.
He was also charged in connection with allegations involving former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas. Those charges were later withdrawn by the National Prosecuting Authority, which cited insufficient evidence to proceed to trial.
Following Jacob Zuma’s departure from the presidency, Duduzane Zuma reduced his public political activity for a period before re-emerging through initiatives such as All Game Changers. He later became more visible within the MK Party during its organisational expansion ahead of the 2024 general election.
Duduzane Zuma now joins the MK Party’s senior leadership alongside party president Jacob Zuma. His twin sister, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, is also a prominent and visible figure within the party.
The party has additionally appointed Tony Yengeni as Second Deputy President as part of its broader leadership configuration. However, it has not provided detailed clarification on how responsibilities are divided between the deputy leadership roles.
Supporters of the party have described the leadership structure as part of organisational consolidation, while some political commentators have raised questions about internal selection processes and the concentration of leadership among closely associated figures. The MK Party has not formally responded in detail to such commentary.
The MK Party’s leadership composition is being closely watched as South Africa approaches the 2026 local government elections, where internal structures are expected to influence candidate selection and campaign coordination.
Political analysts note that leadership arrangements in emerging parties can play a significant role in shaping organisational stability, internal cohesion, and public perception, particularly during periods of rapid expansion.
Duduzane Zuma’s role is likely to be assessed over time based on his public responsibilities and level of involvement in internal decision-making, which the party has not yet fully outlined.
For now, his appointment confirms his formal entry into the MK Party’s senior leadership as the organisation continues to develop and refine its political and administrative framework.
