EFF leader Julius Malema has accused MacG’s Podcast and Chill of operating like a political party that “depoliticises” young South Africans. Speaking during the EFF’s media briefing on Thursday, Malema claimed the popular podcast influences young people under the guise of entertainment.
Malema argued that the show’s role goes beyond interviews and discussions. He alleged that the podcast promotes alcohol consumption by featuring drinking during episodes and encouraging its audience, known as “Chillers”, to associate relaxing with alcohol. He also accused the platform of speaking carelessly about Black and African issues.
The EFF leader said MacG presents himself as a victim whenever he faces criticism. Referring to previous controversies surrounding the podcaster, Malema said MacG responds by claiming that people are trying to “cancel” him instead of addressing the criticism directed at him.
Malema also dismissed MacG’s public image, including his trademark flip-flops, saying it should not be mistaken for originality or substance.
“He thinks wearing flip flops is special, he wears flip flops and insults everyone,” he said. Malema questioned why people who consider themselves critical thinkers would follow the podcast, arguing that it offers little intellectual value.
Instead, Malema praised former EFF deputy president Mbuyiseni Ndlozi for hosting discussions that he believes are more educational. He said Ndlozi invites guests with expertise and ideas worth listening to, adding that he had watched one of Ndlozi’s recent interviews with a former police constable.
Malema’s remarks add another high-profile political voice to the debate around Podcast and Chill, which has frequently sparked controversy over its interviews and commentary. MacG had not publicly responded to Malema’s latest criticism at the time of publication.
