Former United States health official Anthony Fauci has invoked the Fifth Amendment during a high-profile Senate hearing investigating the origins of COVID-19, placing the pandemic’s beginnings back under global scrutiny.
The Republican-led Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, chaired by Senator Rand Paul, is examining whether US-funded coronavirus research, government decisions and public statements were handled transparently during the pandemic.
The hearing forms part of a broader investigation into one of the biggest unanswered questions in modern history: how SARS-CoV-2 first infected humans. Committee members questioned Fauci over allegations that US agencies funded research linked to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and whether Congress was misled about that research.
Fauci declined to answer more than 100 questions, saying his lawyers advised him to invoke his constitutional right against self-incrimination because he feared the proceedings were aimed at securing criminal charges against him.
The investigation does not establish that COVID-19 originated in a laboratory. Instead, it is examining evidence, government records and witness testimony surrounding the pandemic’s early days. US intelligence agencies remain divided, with some assessing that a laboratory incident is possible but only with low confidence, while others continue to favour a natural origin or say the available evidence remains inconclusive. Scientists also remain divided, and no definitive proof has emerged supporting either theory.
The World Health Organization has repeatedly stated that it cannot determine the virus’s origin because crucial data from the earliest stages of the outbreak has not been made available. That has left the question unresolved more than six years after COVID-19 triggered a global pandemic that killed millions, overwhelmed healthcare systems and caused severe economic disruption worldwide.
The latest Senate hearing has added political pressure to an issue that has remained controversial since 2020. Senator Rand Paul has indicated he will seek to hold Fauci in contempt after his refusal to answer questions, while Fauci maintains he has consistently acted on the scientific evidence available at the time and denies allegations that he covered up the virus’s origins. Whatever the outcome of the Senate investigation, the central question of how COVID-19 began remains unanswered.
