France captain Kylian Mbappé has won the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, officially finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals.
The individual accolade was cemented following the final whistle at MetLife Stadium, where world champions Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time. Because Lionel Messi did not find the net during the championship match, he remained frozen at eight goals, allowing the 27-year-old French forward to take the individual crown.
Mbappé’s performance in North America makes him the first player to achieve double digits at a single World Cup since West Germany’s Gerd Müller in 1970.
Despite the historic individual milestone, the accolade carries a bittersweet undertone for Les Bleus. France’s bid for a third global title fell short following a semi-final elimination by Spain, followed by a wide-open, high-scoring 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff match on Saturday. It was during that final fixture in Miami where Mbappé scored his final two goals of the summer to move clear of the chasing pack.
The official tournament leaderboard finalized with Mbappé on top with 10 goals, followed by Messi with eight. Norway’s Erling Haaland and England’s Jude Bellingham finished tied for third with seven goals apiece.
While the tournament reinforces Mbappé’s status as a modern statistical titan, critics have noted that his final cushion in the Golden Boot race came during the lower-intensity environment of the bronze-medal match. The French captain acknowledged the contrast in fortunes after his final match, stating that he would have gladly traded the top-scorer title for a chance to play for the trophy itself.
The Golden Boot was officially presented to Mbappé alongside the tournament’s other individual honors on the pitch in New Jersey, where Spain’s Rodri claimed the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
