The world champion Springboks completely dismantled Wales with a convincing 43-0, seven-try victory at Hollywoodbets Kings Park on Saturday to finish the opening phase of the Nations Championship unbeaten. Despite a greasy surface that led to frequent handling errors and a somewhat disjointed performance, South Africa’s immense physical dominance and superior squad depth proved far too overwhelming for a struggling, scoreless visiting side.
The writing was on the wall immediately as a powerful South African pack forced early scrum penalties and regular defensive breakdowns across the Welsh gainline. Loose forward Jasper Wiese barged over from close range within the first five minutes to open the floodgates, followed shortly by veteran scrumhalf Cobus Reinach sniping over directly from the base of a retreating Welsh scrum. Before the break, young flyhalf Vusi Moyo who looked composed on his international debut—delivered a pinpoint cross-kick that allowed Jesse Kriel to secure a 19-0 half-time cushion.
The second half turned into a definitive showcase for South Africa’s emerging talent as winger Jaco Williams capitalised on a poor Welsh clearance to score a brilliant try on debut. Wales showed defensive grit but lacked any clear attacking identity, failing to penetrate the Springbok 22 or trouble the scorers for a second consecutive Test match against the world champions. Late scores from Herchel Jantjies, Kurt-Lee Arendse, and a maiden Test try from flanker Paul de Villiers pushed the final margin past forty points, securing South Africa’s place at the top of the Nations Championship Southern Section.
